February 5th. Strong southeaster and a high of 34, the now-usual warnings of good conditions for runaway fires. Fire somewhere on the mountain near District Six. For the first time since I've been here, the city center is overcome with haze and the smell of burning persists even with the newsroom windows closed. Eerie. (Photo, Henk Kruger, Cape Argus).
