Artificial insemination in cranes

How artificial insemination in cranes works

Male:

“stroker”: holds crane so that it is facing her, with the crane’s head between her legs so he can’t strike or thrash wildly or anything like that. She strokes the crane’s thighs, as the assumption is this is the area that would be stimulated if he were mounting a female. Also it keeps him calm.
“teaser”: “works things,” the official terminology of a biologist I talked to. That is to say, she plays with his cloaca until he feels like producing semen.
“collecter”: runs a shot glass along cloaca to collect the semen that results.

Female:

“stroker”: holds crane so that it is facing her, crane’s head between her legs. Stroker strokes crane’s back/shoulders, with the assumption that this is the area that would be stimulated if she were being mounted.
“teaser”: "works" cloaca to improve receptivity, injects semen with a syringe.
This process can still scare a young female off laying for the rest of the season, so they usually wait until she’s laid some dud eggs for a couple years to start AI.

I am putting this here because I did not get to include it in the story I wrote yesterday and I think the world needs to know.
