July roundup

Posts that should be on this blog right now but aren't:
  • Love song to my summer CSA: a refrigerator bursting with green things, the dramatic fight against time as I try to use everything before it goes bad, and the inherent feast/famine cycle of receiving one large crate of perishables every two weeks.
  • A list of the changes in store mid-August, when everyone in town changes households, and whole configurations of couplehood either conjoin further or pull apart or more people leave for grad school. It looks like Willy St. and the North side are the places to be in 2012. I'll stay squatting on my shelf by the Arboretum, a little solitary, with no where I can walk to except one lovely little beer hole and the Trader Joe's I've forsworn in favor of a co-op, but still within biking distance of most other desirable things.
  • I got a new job. It will completely reconfigure how my time and energy are spent. Back to more reporter-like tasks (though I won't go so far as to say it's journalism). Science writing of a sort. I'm excited.
  • Some failures in my non-job life. Some are the usual failures. Some are new. What have we learned about ourselves and what we owe the world, et cetera.
  • Pictures of spiders, boats, bicycles, clothes flapping housewifeish on the laundry line, and this t-shirt I turned into a tank top. A view of the street at 6 a.m. A view out a window that you hope no one looks up into. The particular trickles of sweat inside your elbow when you talk on the phone in Wisconsin in July. And so on.
After the job switch, I plan to focus a bit more on longform nonfictional writing of various types. This blog is second on the list of venues to benefit from that kind of attention.

Christmas so far: no eclipse, but fantastic socks and cookies (not pictured because they've been my dinner and breakfast since I received them), and I've finished my shopping. This means I get one night to wrap them and mop the winter shoe-slush tracks off my floors and Be Alone before I leap into family time. That itself is a gift.

Annoying things I have been procrastinating on dealing with since moving:

car problems
no gas (no hot water)
no internet at home
desk needing a few well-placed nails before I can put things on it
fruit flies

no working doorbell
bees preventing me from enjoying my deck

The last is the most important. After that, I can get back to having remotely interesting blog posts, maybe.

on being a weirdo

It is so casual at the new workplace that some people do not wear shoes.

Finally biting the bullet and getting me some internet. My free time should return to being composed of unhealthy levels of internet browsing in T-1 week.

Unless, of course, my apartment has mold somewhere, which would explain why I have gone to sleep sneezing and rubbing my eyes nearly every night since moving in.

And anyway, I shelved all my books finally, sorting by category (nonfiction, science&Spanish, scifi/fantasy, literature, poetry, picture books, embarassing or nostalgic works from my YA-hood, moldering science fiction paperbacks rescued from my dad's house when he remarried that I have not read but will one day, and everything else I have not read) and there's a lot I still have to read. At the rate I rescue stray books from friends and $1 shelves and UW Library book sales, I will never not have a lot to read, of course. But the compulsion is strong after touching every single book in a single evening.

If the new job is comparable to high school, then I really haven't changed much, except I'm more secure about who I am and how I want to spend my free time. It's a nice feeling.
